23 yr old Nicholas Arthur Woodhams managed to steal 9000 iPod Shuffle’s from Apple by claiming fake replacements. Woodhams managed to guess the serial no of 9000 iPod Shuffle’s that were under warranty; and then ordered for a replacement for the same.
Customers are required to place their credit card on file with Apple before such a replacement is sent. In case the original unit (defective iPod for which this warranty is claimed) is not returned, the replacement cost is charged to the users credit card. Woodhams used prepaid Visa cards that would not accept the charge from Apple. Running the scam from March 06 to October 07, he managed to keep.
These iPods were sold out by Woodham at a generous discount earning him some quick $$! And before you get any such crazy ideas, let us inform you that the scamster has been booked already for fraud and money laundering. But leaves us with a case study in cyber crime…
